Next phase of Operation Samudra Setu to commence on June 1 

 ● The Indian Navy will start the next phase of Operation Samudra Setu from June 1 to repatriate Indians who  are stranded overseas amid the coronavirus  pandemic.

● In this process, the Indian Navy Ship Jalashwa will repatriate 700 staff from Colombo, Republic of Sri Lanka to Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu and then repatriate another 700 staff from Colombo Malè, to Tuticorin the Republic of Maldives.

● The Indian Navy has already repatriated 1,488 Indian nationals from Malè to Kochi during the previous phases of the operation.

● After disembarkation at Tuticorin, the evacuated  personnel will be entrusted to the care of the state authorities.

JP Morgan's new chairman, Leo Puri 

  • Leo Puri has been announced to become the new Chairman of JP Morgan South Asia and SouthEast Asia. 
  • He will replace Kalpana Morparia who will be  serving as the chairman until the 1st Quarter of 2021. 
  • Leo Puri has earlier served as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of UTI Mutual Fund.

US postpones G7 Summit till September 

 ● US President Donald Trump has postponed the G7 Summit till September.

● He has expressed his desire to expand the Group to  G10 or G11, including India and three other nations Russia, Australia and South Korea to the grouping of the world's top economies.

● The G7 members are US, Canada, France,  Germany, Italy, Japan, and UK at present.

● The G7 Summit could happen before the UN General Assembly session in September.

● The Presidential election in the US is scheduled for November 3.

● Mr Trump is seeking a second term in the White House.‘One Sun One World One Grid’:

India initiates talks on West to SE Asia solar grid 

  • India has moved ahead for an ambitious global electricity grid, calling for bids to roll-out the “One Sun One World One Grid" (OSOWOG) plan. 
  • The plan focuses on a framework for facilitating global cooperation, building a global ecosystem of interconnected renewable energy resources (mainly solar energy) that can be seamlessly shared. 
  • The vision behind the OSOWOG is ‘The Sun Never Sets’. 
  • It has been taken up under the technical assistance program of the World Bank. 
  • OSOWOG plan may also leverage the International Solar Alliance (ISA), co-founded by India that has 67 countries as members.

Explosion at Baghjan production well under Baghjan Oil field in Tinsukia 

  • A huge explosion was reported at the Baghjan  production well under Baghjan Oil field of Oil  India Limited in Tinsukia. 
  • The blast occurred as operational work was taking place during the day due to certain technical problems in the oil field.  
  • Baghjan oil field is located in Assam’s Tinsukia district. 
  • It is being managed by Oil India Limited.
