U.S. House Passes Uyghur Human Rights Bill 

  • The U.S. House of Representatives has  approved a legislation calling for sanctions on Chinese officials responsible for oppression of Uighur Muslims. 
  • The Bill has been sent to the White House for President Donald Trump to veto or sign into law. 
  • The Bill calls for sanctions against those responsible for the repression of Uyghurs and other Muslim groups in the Xinjiang province of China, where the UN estimates this to be more than just One million Muslims were detained in the camps.  
  • It singles out the region’s Communist Party secretary, Chen Quanguo, as responsible for “gross human rights violations” against them. 
  • The Bill also calls on U.S. firms operating in  Xinjiang region to ensure their products do not include parts using forced labour.

Uighurs

 ● Uighurs are a Muslim minority community concentrated in the country’s northwestern Xinjiang  province.

● They claim closer ethnic ties to Turkey and other central Asian countries than to China, by brute — and brutal — force.

National Human Rights Commission 

● NHRC was established on 12th October, 1993.

● Paris Principles were adopted for the promotion and protection of human rights in October 1991,  and were endorsed by the General Assembly of the United Nations in 1993.

● The NHRC is an embodiment of India’s concern for the promotion and protection of human rights.

● Human rights as rights related to the life , freedom, equality and dignity of the person guaranteed by the Constitution or expressed in the International Covenants and enforceable by the Indian courts;

● The commission is a multi-member body consisting of a chairman and five members.

 ● The chairperson should be a retired chief justice of India or a judge of the Supreme Court.

● The chairman and members are appointed by the President

● The chairman and members hold office for a term of three years or until they attain the age of 70  years, whichever is earlier.

Central Institute of Plastics Engineering & Technology (CIPET) has been renamed as the Central  Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering & Technology (CIPET)

● Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and  Technology (CIPET) has been renamed as Central  Institute of Petrochemicals Engineering and  Technology (CIPET).

● It is a premier national institution under the Ministry of  Chemicals and Fertilizers, Government of India.

● The changed name has been registered under the  Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1975.

● It was established in 1968 by the Government of India  with the assistance of the United Nations  Development Programme (UNDP).

● The primary objective of CIPET has been contributing  towards the growth of the plastics industry through a  combined program of education and research.

World Digestive Health Day: 29th May

  • World Digestive Health Day is observed  globally on 29th May every year. 
  • It is organised by the World Gastroenterology  Organisation (WGO) in collaboration with the  WGO Foundation (WGOF). 
  • The day was launched in 2004 to mark the 45th anniversary of the creation of the World  Gastroenterology Organisation.  
  • The association has over 100 affiliate societies around the globe and over 50,000 individual members. 
  • "Gut Microbiome: A Global Perspective" is the theme for the World Digestive Health Day 2020 campaign.
