● The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is a forum of 120 developing world states that are not formally aligned with or against any major power block. After the United Nations, it is the largest grouping of states worldwide.

● Drawing on the principles agreed at the Bandung Conference in 1955, the NAM was established in 1961 in Belgrade, SR Serbia, Yugoslavia through an initiative of the Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru[5], Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser and the Yugoslav President Josip Broz Tito. This led to the first Conference of Heads of State or Governments of Non-Aligned Countries.[6] The term non-aligned movement first appears in the fifth conference in 1976, where participating countries are denoted as "members of the movement"

International Firefighters' Day: 04 May 

● International firefighters day (IFFD) is observed on May 4 in order to honour the work and sacrifice made by firefighters.

● The day also pays respects to those who have lost their lives while performing their duty.

● On this day, people sport a symbolic red and blue ribbon badge.

● These two colours denote the main elements of a firefighters work.

● The red colour symbolises fire while the blue is for water. The combination of red and blue is also globally recognised for representing emergency service.

● The International Firefighters Day came into existence after five firefighters lost their lives while they were trying to control a wildfire in Australia's Victoria's Linton.

● The incident occurred on December 2, 1998, in which Garry Vredeveldt, Chris Evans, Stuart Davidson, Jason Thomas, and Matthew Armstrong lost their lives.

IFSC Authority headquarters will be in Gandhinagar

• The central government has notified the establishment of the International Financial Services Centres Authority.
• At present, entities operating in the IFSC are regulated by multiple regulators such as The Reserve Bank of India (RBI), Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), and Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (Irdai).

Maintenance work at Pamban Railway Bridge underway amid lockdown

● Although train services were suspended across the country in view of COVID-19, the railway employees engaged in the Pamban Railway Bridge maintenance and repair work at Rameswaram.

● The railway employees here are working in full swing in the absence of rail traffic.

● Pamban Bridge is a railway bridge that links Mandapam town with Pamban Island in mainland India and Rameswaram.

● It was the first sea bridge in India which was opened on 24 February 1914. And was India's longest sea-bridge before the Bandra-Worli Sea Connection opened in 2010.  Badminton World Championships postponed to November 2021

● The 2020 badminton World Championships has been postponed to November this year.

● The tournament is traditionally held in August but will now take place from November 29 to December 5, 2021.

● The tournament is scheduled to take place at the Carolina Marin Stadium in Huelva, Spain.

● Earlier it had announced that all tournaments that were scheduled to take place in the months of May, June and July stood suspended.

● Most of the tournaments that were suspended were qualifiers for the Tokyo Olympics.

Cotton procurement through MSP operations continues in Maharashtra

● Cotton procurement through MSP operations is  continuing in Maharashtra.

● Ministry of Textiles has reassured farmers that Cotton  Corporation of India is well geared to implement the MSP operations of Centre in the state.

● A total of 36, 500 quintals of Kapas equivalent to 6900 bales have been procured during the lockdown period.

● Steps have been taken by CCI to clear the  outstanding payment to farmers for the procured Kapas.

● Out of the total procurement value of Rs. 4995 crores, a sum of Rs. 4987 crores has already reached  the farmers.

Cotton cultivation in India 
● Cotton is the most important fibre crop not only of India but of the entire world.

● It provides the basic raw material (cotton fibre) to cotton textile industry.

● Its seed (binola) is used in vanaspati industry and can also be used as part of fodder for milch cattle to get better milk.

● Temperature required: 21°C and 30°C.

● Soil Type: Well-drained black cotton soil of Deccan Plateau.

● Top Cotton Producing States: Gujarat, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh,  Rajasthan.

● India is the world’s largest cotton producer in terms of the produced output surpassing China.

● India is the only country that grows cotton in the form of hybrids. Also, India was the first to develop hybrid cotton back in 1970.

Bay of Bengal Boundary Layer Experiment  

● The “BoBBLE: Bay of Bengal Boundary  Layer Experiment” is an experiment to  determine, quantify and Model ocean- atmospheric interactions driving volatility in the South Asian Monsoon.

● It seeks to examine the impact of ocean processes in the Bay of Bengal (BoB) on the monsoon system.

● The Bay of Bengal (BoB) plays a  fundamental role in controlling the weather  systems that make up the South Asian  summer monsoon system.
