Govt decides to provide Mid-day meals to students during summer vacation in wake of situation arising out of COVID 19


● Government has announced around 11 per cent increase in annual central allocation of cooking cost under Mid-day meal scheme to 8 thousand 100 crore rupees in view of the situation arising out of COVID-19.

● The annual central allocation of cooking cost for  procurement of pulses, vegetable, oil, spices and fuel under Mid Day Meal Scheme was 7 thousand 300 crore rupees.

● Considering the health of the students, during the lockdown, ration is being provided under mid-day meal for the children to get adequate and nutritious food.

● The scheme covers more than 12 crore children studying in over 11 lakh schools across the country.

● The Midday Meal Scheme comes under the HRD Ministry’s Department of School Education and Literacy.

● It was launched in the year 1995 as a centrally  sponsored scheme.

Mid-day scheme

•The Mid-day Meal Scheme is the Government of India's school meal program designed to improve the nutritional status of school-age children across the world.
• The initiative offers free lunches on working days for children in government primary and upper primary schools, community sponsorship, local body, Education Guarantee Scheme, and alternative creative education centres, Madarsa and Maqtabs funded by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, and National Child Labor Project Schools run by the Labor Ministry.
• It is the largest of its kind in the world.

NLC India commences coal production at Talabira-II & III Opencast Coal Mine

• NLC India has commenced coal production at its Talabira-II and III Opencast Coal Mine in Odisha.
• Tamil Nadu-based Navaratna company said its production marked the entry of NLC India into the coal mining sector in the state.
• The Talabira II and III coal mines were allotted to this Navratna firm in 2016 to meet the requirement of its existing and future coal-fired power plants.
• The company had said they would fuel their 4,200 MW thermal power projects in thatstate by generating 20 million tons of coal per year from those two coal blocks.

Numaligarh Refinery Ltd begins operations with precautions

• In Assam, the Numaligarh Refinery Limited, NRL has started economic activities with all proper precautions.
• The projects worth 2 thousand crore rupees have started in the state.
• 2 thousand people are working at Guwahati and Numaligarh offices of the NRL.
• NRL initially adopted the work from home  method during lock down period.

HCARD, a robot, to assist frontline COVID-19 healthcare warriors

● Healthcare workers at hospitals are risking COVID-19 infection while taking care of those infected by it 24/7.

● Perhaps the level of risk may get reduced hereafter with the help of a new friend, HCARD.

● The robotic device HCARD, in short for Hospital Care Assistive Robotic Device, can help frontline healthcare workers in maintaining physical distance from those infected by coronavirus.

● HCARD is developed by Durgapur-based CSIR lab, Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute.

● The device is equipped with various state-of-the-art  technologies and works both in automatic as well as manual modes of navigation.

● This robot can be controlled and monitored by a nursing booth with a control station having such features as navigation, drawer activation for providing medicines and food to patients, sample collection and  audio-visual communication.
